What is UMSFP?

The University of Michigan Sustainable Food Program (UMSFP) works to organize all of the sustainable food student groups on campus into one coherent whole so that food sustainability is promoted throughout the campus.  The program is comprised of ten student groups, and there is no current staff supervisor. However, six graduate students are helping facilitate. The funding comes from Planet Blue Student Innovation Fund, and their current budget is $42,000. The grant is distributed on a case-by-case basis; only approved projects receive funding. Communication amongst the ten student groups is achieved through monthly meetings, where one representative from each group attends. During these meetings, updates, challenges, and current projects are reviewed.

How does UMSFP communicate?

The program currently uses their website, weekly newsletter, and MBox to communicate amongst the ten groups involved. Actual meetings and social events have been noted as the best methods of communication. Some challenges that contribute to miscommunication include student involvement, no UMSFP venue, and inconsistent meeting times.

How can the social sciences strengthen communication within the U-M Sustainable Food Program as well as between member groups?
